While the number of private schools is continuously increasing in this period of liberalisation, 70 per cent population of the country is untouched by them. This population resides in villages and condition of the village schools is deteriorating with every passing day. The teachers are irregular, come to school late, do not teach properly in the classes for getting tuitions, etc. The result is even class V pass students are unable to read and write properly.
Women of Govindpara village tried to go deep into the reasons of this rather dismal scenario. Very quickly they found that the teacher came to the school late, went back early and even during the school time indulged in long telephonic talks. The women signed a resolution in the meeting of self help group and put the same at the school door. The resolution advised the teacher to mend his ways and in case he failed to do so, the women said they would contact the District Collector for his removal.
Next morning when the teacher read the resolution, the teachers castigated the women. But the women reasoned with the teacher that because of his irregularity and not taking interest in teaching, the children were losing interest in education and were increasingly working as labour and playing aimlessly. They made it clear to the teacher if he did not mend his ways, they would make complaint to the Collector.
The teacher got the point. He begged pardon of every one and promised to be regular and provide quality education to the children. He requested the women not to approach the Collector and on this the women assured him of no action if he did his job in a right manner.
Thus women started taking leadership for making education system better in their village. |
