An Inspiring Model of Gandhian Philosophy and Environmental Sustainability

Located in the tribal-dominated Jhabua district of Madhya Pradesh, the “Sampark” institution’s campus serves as a key center for the upliftment and empowerment of tribal communities. Established in 1990 on challenging terrain characterized by uneven land and theft issues, the campus was developed with a vision to address societal needs and future plans. It is not just a hub for service and education but also a unique model based on Gandhian ideals and principles of environmental sustainability.

Education and Skill Development

  • Basic Education: A residential school operating on Gandhian principles of basic education caters to students from grades 1 to 10. The school comprises 16 classrooms, 2 workshop rooms, and separate quarters for teachers.
  • Skill-Based Education: Students are taught activities like making candles, balms, tooth powder, and Ayurvedic oils.
  • Computer Training Center: With 12 computer systems, students are provided technical knowledge, ensuring all students learn basic computer operations within the year.

Participatory Campus Management

  • The cleanliness, cooking, and other campus activities are managed through the active participation of a “Children’s Parliament” and staff members.

  • Biogas Plant: A flexible biogas plant with a capacity of 5 cubic meters is used in the kitchen, capable of preparing meals for 15-20 people daily.

  • A 3-lakh-liter underground tank collects water from 15,000 square feet of rooftop area. This tank meets the campus’s drinking water needs for one month.

  • Dry Waste: Incinerators are used to heat water for students’ bathing.
  • Organic Waste: Organic waste is converted into compost, and food waste is used for biogas production.

  • Organic farming is carried out on 8 bighas of land, cultivating pulses, oilseeds, maize, wheat, vegetables, and medicinal crops. A dedicated storage room is used for organic seeds.

  • A 95-meter-wide stop dam on the Pumpavati River ensures water availability for agriculture and livestock even during summers.

  • Approximately 25,000 liters of water are used daily and recycled for use in organic farming through drip irrigation.

Farmers receive 3-7 days of residential training on organic farming, seed production, and animal husbandry.
