Swasthya Saheli Program

Empowering Women as Community Health Leaders

Sampark’s Swasthya Saheli program is a grassroots women-led health initiative transforming rural healthcare delivery in Jhabua. Launched in 40 underserved villages, the program has trained 118 Swasthya Sahelis—local women who act as first responders and health educators within their communities.

These women are equipped with knowledge and health kits to manage common ailments, provide maternal and reproductive health guidance, and deliver basic first aid. Their role is
especially critical in areas where government healthcare infrastructure is sparse or non-functional. Their training includes preventive care, nutrition education, maternal health, and
early disease detection.

Specialized Training Empowering Health Advocates

Notably, 50 Swasthya Sahelis have received specialized training in gynecological and reproductive health, enabling them to support women on sensitive issues such as menstruation, family planning, and safe pregnancy. They have played a major role in immunizing 7,230 women and assisting 2,400 women in safe childbirth, significantly improving health outcomes.

Through coordination with government health departments, the program ensures regular supply of essential medicines to the Swasthya Sahelis. These women also mobilize communities for health camps, sanitation drives, and disease prevention campaigns. Their work has activated Village Health and Sanitation Committees in 39 villages, ensuring sustained access to healthcare and emergency medicine.

Swasthya Saheli: Trusted Voices, Healthier Villages

Beyond service delivery, the program fosters leadership among tribal women, enabling them to address taboo topics like menstruation, HIV, and RTIs in culturally sensitive ways. Their
presence builds trust in the community, and their ongoing training ensures continued skill development.

The Swasthya Saheli program has become a pillar of Sampark’s health strategy, demonstrating how community-driven solutions can bridge gaps in rural health systems. By empowering women as care providers, educators, and leaders, Sampark has created a self-sustaining health ecosystem that is deeply rooted in local knowledge, trust, and collective
action.

Thematic Areas of Intervention and Impact

Health (SDG 3)

118 Swasthya Sahelis were trained to support community health. They ensured 24,000 safe deliveries and treated 1,084 severely malnourished children. Campaigns promoted menstrual hygiene—30% of girls began using sanitary pads, while 50% took iron supplements. Health awareness, sanitation, and nutrition campaigns significantly reduced infections and child malnourishment in tribal communities, improving women and children's health indicators.
